You may not spend a lot of time thinking about your body. In fact, that is the one thing that most of us really take for granted, and only heed to it when we fall ill. But what most of us fail to recognise, is the fantastical things the human body is capable of. The fact that it's actually a very complex machine eludes us, but here's a time to set things right, and introduce you to some amazing facts about the human body that will blow your mind — quite painlessly, according to number 6.
1. Atoms in your body: It is hard to grasp just how small the atoms that make up your body are until you take a look at the sheer number of them. An adult is made up of around on7,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (7 octillion) atoms.
2. Hair: A full head of human hair is strong enough to hold around 12 tonnes of weight (an average African Elephant weighs about half as much). Also, your hair cannot be destroyed by cold, water or climate change and unless set on fire decays at an extremely slow pace.
3. Virus in your DNA: Your DNA includes genes from at least eight retroviruses that perform reproductory functions but were not always a part of your body.
4. Sprint: In full sprint a human body can generate up to 2,000 watts or 2.5 horsepower of energy.
5. Surviving in Space: Without a spacesuit, you would suffocate to death in the vacuum. However, you would not explode, boil or freeze to death unlike what some movies depict.
6. Headache: Your brain does not feel pain, it has no pain receptors.
7. Heart: The heart can keep beating even after being removed from rest of the body due to its electrical impulse, so long as it receives oxygen.
8. Stomach Acid: The stomach acid is strong enough to dissolve a razor blade (PS: Do not swallow).
9. Bacteria in body: There is 10 times more bacteria cells in your body than your own. For reference, an adult human body has around 10 trillion cells.
10. Heat Sensors: Your skin can sense heat without actually touching the object. This is due to the thermoreceptors present.
11. Proprioception: Your brain can tell what your where your body parts are and what your body is doing without the five senses.
12. Taste Nerve in the Ears: Chorda tympani, a nerve that runs through the middle of your ears, is responsible for carrying taste signals to your brain.
13. Lungs: Lungs use a surface area of about 70-100 sq meters with blood to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. This is enough to cover one side of a tennis court.
14. Fat: For every pound of fat tissues, a network of capillaries of 1 mile is created to furnish it.
15. Brain a Super Computer: Your brain can store 2.5 million giga bytes of data and proccess info much faster than the fastest super computer.
16. Length of Blood Vessels: A human body has 60,000 miles of blood vessels. In comparision the Earth's cicumference is only 25,000 miles.
17. Colours: Your eyes can detect 10 million different colours.
18. Spit: Your body produces two-four pints of spit per day, enough to fill a 2 litre soda bottle.
19. Human Fur: You have as much hair on your body as a chimpanzee. Most of your hair just happens to be so fine they're almost invisible.
20. Scent: Your nose can recognize 50,000 different scents.
